Who we are!!
Chama Valley Youth Basketball began in March of 2007 as a program to
involve local youth in additional after school activities beneficial
to building character and discipline. This program was started by
Barry Bellinger who has over 30 years of coaching experience working
with all ages from 5 years through High School. This is a basketball
program that stresses the fundamentals of the game and learning to
play against tournament caliber teams. The end result is to provide
players for the local Escalante High School basketball program that
are much more skilled and competitive at that level.
Chama is a small town of @1250 people and the Valley area it resides
in is home to a total of maybe 3500 people. There are no youth
programs for children after the local school programs finish in
February.
The intensity of this program helps to keep children from possibly
being involved in activities detrimental to their character
development.
The first year of the program began with about a dozen children. The
second year saw that number double. Coach Bellinger believes that the
third year of this program will see at least another doubling of
registered players.
The administration of Chama Valley Youth Basketball is by volunteers
including Coach Bellinger. Fundraising is done to pay for uniforms,
equipment, travel expenses and tournament registration fees for the
teams.
For the first time in the Chama area, a nationally sponsored
tournament through Mid American Youth Basketball (MAYB) will be held
on May 1-2nd. This tournament will bring much needed
revenue into the Chama Valley area with 25-30 teams coming from New
Mexico and Colorado to play.
Your support is of upmost importance to the success of developing the
players’ character, leadership & skills. Thank you for your
consideration in supporting the Chama Valley Youth Basketball program.
